Mesh size refers to the number of openings in one linear inch of a screen or mesh material. It is a standard way to describe how fine or coarse a screen is. For example, an 80‑mesh screen has 80 openings per inch, while a 140‑mesh screen has 140 openings per inch. As the mesh number increases, the openings become smaller, allowing finer particles to pass through while blocking larger ones. Lower mesh numbers indicate larger openings and a coarser screen, whereas higher mesh numbers indicate smaller openings and a finer screen.
