If your sprinkler system is not running as expected from the app, several factors could be preventing it from operating correctly. This article walks through the most common causes and troubleshooting steps to identify and resolve the issue.
Most common causes:
- Checking the controller's Wi-Fi connectivity and communication status.
- Reviewing app reports to determine whether a rain sensor, flow sensor, water trigger, or other water-saving device has suspended watering.
- Verifying that the water supply is turned on and flowing properly.
- Testing controller voltage to confirm the controller is operating correctly.
If the app indicates that the system is running but no zones are active, first verify that the controller is connected and communicating properly. This helps determine whether the issue is related to controller connectivity before proceeding with further troubleshooting. Performing a network test is a simple process and can be completed while standing in front of the controller. This application requires a 2.4 GHz wireless band connection. Learn more
Please use the steps below to check your connection from the controller.
- Select Status.
- Select Connection Status.
- Select Check Connection.
- Select is Ok when the test is complete.
If the test fails, we recommend resetting the controller. Learn More
Reviewing app reports to determine whether a rain sensor, flow sensor, water trigger, or other water-saving device has suspended watering.
- Sign in to your Hydrawise account.
- Tap Watering on the bottom toolbar.
- View the day when watering did not occur to see whether there is a notice about a cancellation.
The water supply to the zone valves may be turned off. To check, locate the zone valve and manually activate it by turning the solenoid (the component with the wires attached) one-half turn counterclockwise.
If water is available to the valve, the sprinklers should activate even when the controller is not operating. This test can help determine whether the issue is related to the controller or the water supply.
Refer to the illustration below for instructions on manually activating the valve solenoid.

- Manually start the affected zone using the controller's touchscreen.
- Measure the output voltage at the controller using a voltmeter. Place the probes on the Common (C) terminal and the corresponding station terminal (for example, C and 2). The reading should be 25-28 VAC.
- Check the voltage at the valve. Locate the valve for the zone in question and measure the voltage across the same two wires connected to the solenoid. The reading should again be 25-28 VAC.
- Evaluate the results:
- If the voltage at the valve is low or absent, there may be a damaged wire, poor splice, or loose connection between the controller and the valve.
- If the voltage at the valve is within the 25-28 VAC range, the wiring is functioning properly.
- Inspect the solenoid. If the valve is receiving the correct voltage but is not operating, the solenoid may be faulty and should be replaced (P/N 606800).
